Too Faced La Creme Color Drenched Lipstick | The Expansion

The launch of the Too Faced La Creme Lipsticks some years ago went a little unnoticed in my opinion. The original shade launch only had a handful of colours to choose from and though the formula was lovely, and the packaging classy (a switch from the brand’s usual bright candy-kissed style) they just didn’t seem to get the press they probably should have. Since then, there have been two expansions to the range, the most recent adding a whopping 10 more shades including everything from the baby blue hued Unicorn Tears* (it applies as a violet tinged pink opal rather than the candy floss blue the tube suggests) to the candy apple red, 90210hhh*. I recently got my hands on nine of the newest shades to the range and have some thoughts to share with you all. Let’s tuck in….

The first thing I noticed about the expansion to Too Faced’s La Creme Lipsticks was that many of the new shades have a metallic or shimmer finish. Normally this is not my lippie of choice, but I can see why the brand added them to round out the line (which has many cream-finish shades). Secondly, I noticed that there were three pinks, all of which were cool toned which surprised me. The line already had a cool rose and seems to lack warmer pinks and peaches in entirety. 

Now when it comes to formula, the La Creme’s for the most part fit in with the original concept, which is a creamy, luxurious feeling lipstick. I love that they aren’t super thick in texture, but still glide over lines and most dry patches on the lips. They actually feel quite light weight on the lips, and are mildly hydrating without sliding around or bleeding into fine lines (In general I don’t find lipstick hydrating on my eternally dry lips, but these are certainly comfortable). In complete opposition to the recent matte lip craze, Too Faced’s la Creme Lipsticks are balmy, with a glossy sheen that makes lips look lush and plump, but of course wear time is compromised with this. I did notice that some of the really shimmery shades like Ursula felt gritty in the tube during the application, but it didn’t translate to the lips (and actually looked really fantastic on application!)

I think these are a real underdog formula in the lipstick world, and am generally surprised I don’t read more about them. The satin gold metal tubes are classic and weighty with an expensive feel, and the formula feels smooth and light. I can’t see myself wearing many of the shades in the new launch, purely because I was a teen in the 90’s and the frosty opalescent blue-violet of Unicorn Tears gives me war flashbacks. Well, that and cool bubble gum pinks just don’t work on this 30-something year old. Having said that, the range also has some great neutrals, corals and berries so there really is something for everyone!
