I am so sorry this is such an insanely late response – I don’t know why I never saw this before but thank you so much for sharing your experience here and I am so glad you are out.
You are absolutely right, often by the time it becomes something you no longer can make excuses for or shrug off, its very late in the game. I am 14 years out now and it STILL affects the way I am occasionally – those cracks can take a lifetime to heal.

I think sometimes we don’t see the signs because they can seem so gradual. It isn’t until we take a moment and really start taking inventory that it seems like something actually worrisome and not just a one time thing.

I had two relationships that I knew weren’t healthy ( i am now married to an amazing man that truly care and love me) and that I was treated badly (controlling what I was eating or if I was aloud to go out or not and that can of things) but not to that level and I managed to get out very quickly form those two short but awful relationships. but I can understand how easy it is to not see the sign and before you know it you get trap. I hope my English is not too bad. Also I wanted to say that it was brave for you to open up. I am glad you are now out of this abusive man. Take care x

I’m also beyond happy that you found happiness. I’m crying as I write this, I won’t go into my story it’s too long and complex. I’m out now but not how in a way I would have imagined or wanted. It left me so damaged that all of these years later I’m still a mess. Thank you for this post. I hope it helps others and gives them the strength to get out because as you know, by the time you see it you are in very deep. I had hoped by writing this that it would spread some more awareness on how easy it is to fall down the rabbit hole, so to speak. Albeit sad, thankfully it only took 3 years of my life and in turn gave me uncountable years of strength!
